Balancing Acts: Life as an Educator, Entrepreneur, and Executive Director
Introduction
I wear multiple hats in the intricate dance of life – a first-grade teacher, an entrepreneur, and the executive director of The I Am House, a 501(c)(3) I founded. Navigating these diverse roles comes with challenges, but it's a journey I've chosen to embrace. Join me as I unveil the behind-the-scenes struggles and triumphs of maintaining balance amid these demanding roles.
The Daily Juggle
Being a full-time first-grade teacher requires unwavering dedication and passion. Add to that the responsibilities of an entrepreneur and overseeing a nonprofit organization, and the juggling act becomes more complex. Balancing the needs of students, the demands of a business, and the responsibilities of a nonprofit is no small feat.
Struggles and Solutions
1. Time Management Woes
I set so many alarms throughout the day; it’s wild, but it helps me keep track of my busy schedule
I feel like I have calendars for my calendars, but it works for me. Do you utilize the calendar on your phone? If not, share your secret. How do you keep up with life? lol
I make realistic goals and prioritize what needs to be done
2. Emotional Energy Drain:
Being a dedicated educator and entrepreneur is TAXING on my mental, physical, and emotional health
I’m a big advocate for therapy. I don’t think I could’ve survived 15 years as an educator without it lol
I also practice daily prayer journaling, devotionals, and meditation
Balancing Acts in Action
1. Physical Well-being
I allowed my physical health to go to the back burner for a while, which greatly impacted my life! I now exercise 5-6 days a week, but it took time to get there.
I go to Burn Boot Camp. It’s expensive, BUT I’m trying to look at it as an investment in my health. I’m able to keep track of my visits, my goals, and my progress.
Another part of that journey is meal-prepping. I try to switch up the menu all the time, by my refrigerator is filled with ready-made breakfasts, lunches, and snacks that I can quickly pack for my day at school. This helps me stay on track.
2. Mindfulness Practices
I’m not going to lie. I used to turn up my nose at mediation and think how and why would anyone do that, but now? I LOVE it! Soulspace is a FREE app that I use to help me get centered and calm before starting my busy days with my students.
3. Knowing When to Recharge and Having Creative Outlets
There’s a NEVER-ENDING to-do list when you’re trying to juggle so many things. Burnout can happen easily. We must take breaks to recharge.
I love to unwind, whether going on a weekend getaway, a trip to the spa, painting, hiking, or simply unplugging from work and binge-watching my movies and shows.
4. Spiritual Connection
- Prayer and a personal relationship with God are the most important parts of my life and who I am. I don’t know how I would function without it. My prayer journaling and knowing that I have God to turn to and do life with makes life worth living.
Conclusion
Balancing the roles of an educator, entrepreneur, and nonprofit executive director requires a delicate equilibrium. By openly sharing my struggles and unveiling the coping mechanisms that have helped me maintain sanity, I hope to inspire others facing similar challenges. Remember, the key lies not in perfection but in the art of balancing, adjusting, and finding joy in the journey.
